UB Science Festival 2025
The UB Science Festival is a premier scientific outreach activity. Seeing the Historic Building filled with primary school children fascinated by science workshops is exciting. I had the opportunity to teach the youngest ones the joy of science and proactively showcase our projects. Over 440 researchers mobilized to bring science closer to children.
What is the UB Science Festival?
The UB Science Festival (Festa de la Ciència) is one of the University of Barcelona's biggest science outreach events. Every year it fills the Historic Building with workshops, experiments and demos designed to bring research closer to the public, especially primary school children.
In the 2025 edition more than 440 researchers took part, turning the university into a giant hands-on science lab for the day.
Teaching science to the youngest
I had the chance to join as part of our research group and explain science to kids. There is nothing quite like watching a child's face light up when they understand something new, and nothing more challenging than explaining a complex idea in words a seven-year-old can follow.
It was also a great opportunity to proactively showcase our projects and show that the software and data behind research can be just as exciting as the lab experiments.
Why outreach matters for engineers
As a software engineer, I spend most of my time explaining technology to other technical people. Outreach events force you to do the opposite: strip away jargon and focus on why something matters.
That skill transfers directly to my daily work. Whether I'm presenting a platform to researchers or explaining an AI solution to a business, the goal is the same: make the value clear without hiding behind technical terms.
A day to remember
Seeing hundreds of researchers volunteer their time to inspire the next generation is a reminder of why science and technology matter. I'm already looking forward to the next edition.
